Black Group Calls Out-of-Wedlock Births ‘Greatest Crisis’ for Black Americans, Cites New Pew
Research Center Study

LOS ANGELES—Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, is calling the alarming rate of black out-of-wedlock births the single greatest crisis for black Americans. A new study by the Pew Research Center on American motherhood shows that a record 41 percent of births in 2008 were to single mothers, that’s an increase from 28 percent in 1990. According to the study, black women are leading this trend with a 72 percent out-of-wedlock birth rate, compared to 53 percent of children born to Hispanic women and 29 percent to white women.

“Black Americans are suffering from moral poverty and the so-called black ‘leaders’ are clueless as to how to fix it,” said Rev. Peterson. “The breakdown of the family has been an issue since the 60’s when black out-of-wedlock births increased from 18 percent in 1950 to 23.6 percent in 1963. Over the last four decades, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NAACP, the Congressional black Caucus and most of the black churches have in large part contributed to the spiraling moral decay in urban America.”

The late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then Assistant Secretary of Labor in Lyndon Johnson’s administration, forecast the disintegration of the black family in 1965. In his report titled “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action,” Moynihan wrote, “A community that allows a large number of men to grow up in broken families, dominated by women, never acquiring any stable relationship to male authority, never acquiring rational expectations about the future—that community asks for and gets chaos.”

“Moynihan was absolutely correct; the black community is in chaos. As long as most blacks remain immoral and continue to blame white racism for their problems, blacks as a whole will languish in abject moral and physical poverty,” said Rev. Peterson.
