After Hurricane Katrina, we witnessed the best and the worst regarding our nation and its citizens. We saw Americans helping one another despite the breakdown of national, state, and local government agencies, and the lack of leadership at all levels. We witnessed the worst in human nature as lawlessness, looting, and other types of criminal activity further crippled the city of New Orleans. What followed was more chaos, blame, and confusion.
There appeared to be no sense of real understanding coming from our leaders as to what caused not only the physical breakdown, but more importantly the moral collapse that left so many residents stranded waiting for the government to bail them out. For the first time, we witnessed on national television American citizens without the moral courage or inner strength to save themselves and their families from a calamity they saw coming.
BOND Founder and President Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, along with other conservative Americans, sought to answer what went wrong and offer real solutions to what was emerging as the primary problem in New Orleans and across America's inner cities: "Moral Poverty."
What followed were several articles by Rev. Peterson; most notable was the "Moral poverty cost blacks in New Orleans" (9/21/05) column. This was followed by three major conferences in Washington D.C., co-sponsored with The Heritage Foundation; a tour of New Orleans during the one year anniversary of Katrina; The Moral Reconstruction Speaking Tour; and ongoing efforts to implement the solutions outlined in these articles and conferences in New Orleans and in urban areas across the country.
BOND's Moral Reconstruction Campaign augments the critical work we are doing with men and their families, particularly our Home for Boys and After School Character Building Programs for hurting young men.
Please join BOND in the Moral Reconstruction of America. We are the one organization with the understanding and expertise to rebuild fathers, the family and America.
