In February, leading Black pro-life and pro-family leaders gathered in Washington, DC, at the “Leaders for Life Luncheon”—a unique one of a kind forum sponsored by The National Black Pro-Life Union. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the proportionate number of Black babies being aborted in the U.S.; and to usher in Black History month in a meaningful manner.
“February is Black History Month, a time when we remember our struggles to obtain freedom and civil rights and to celebrate…celebrate the triumphs that we have achieved,” said Day Gardner, President of the National Black Pro-Life Union. “It is also a time to focus on the many challenges that lie ahead such as the paramount challenge of ending abortion.”
Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, was the keynote speaker at the luncheon held in the Mansfield Room of the Unites States Capitol building.
Rev. Peterson discussed how abortions are decimating an entire generation of Black babies and what Black Americans must do to turn the tide.
He also addressed the need to expose godless organizations like Planned Parenthood—who operate abortion mills throughout inner cities across America. Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger wanted to get rid of the “underclass,” especially Blacks.
“If Black Americans understood the evil forces behind groups like Planned Parenthood and the ‘pro-choice’ lies–abortions would drastically decrease among Black women,” said Rev. Peterson.
“Blacks coming together like this to take a stand for life will have a powerful impact on America.”
Since 1973, more than 44 million children have been aborted; 15 million of them were Black.
Speakers at the luncheon included lawmakers from both parties. Democratic Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE), Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), and other lawmakers addressed the mostly Black audience.
Sen. Nelson, who used to be a youth pastor in Lincoln, Nebraska, told the audience at the National Black Pro-Life Union event that he has been a leader in passing a federal partial birth abortion ban; and co-sponsored a bill to prohibit adults from taking minors across state lines for abortions, without notifying parents.
President George W. Bush signed into law the same bill passed by Congress banning partial birth abortions.
Others who attended and participated at the luncheon and reception include: Rev. Johnny Hunter of LEARN; Rev. Clenard Childress, BlackGenocide.org; Alvin Williams, BAMPAC; Claude Allen, The Gerard Foundation; Lawson Lipford-Cruz, Black Students for Life; and Mychal Massie, Project 21.
Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the Benediction.
Rev. Peterson concluded his remarks by emphasizing the need for Black men to take a stand on this issue. He also encouraged Black Americans as a group to drop their anger towards Whites so they can clearly see that “this battle is a spiritual battle between good versus evil, not Black against White.” He received a standing ovation from the crowd after his remarks.
After the luncheon there was a reception held in the Gold Room of the Rayburn House Building in cooperation with Congressman Chris Smith, Co-Chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus.
